Christine Schofield is our professionally trained hearing
therapist. Christine specialises in Tinnitus Management Programmes and
Vestibular Rehabilitation Clinics. Tinnitus is the name given to
the condition of noises in the ears and / or in the head with no external
source; and vestibular rehabilitation in common terms is balance therapy.
Tinnitus
For
tinnitus sufferers, Christine will create a management programme to enable you
to cope with tinnitus. If
you train yourself to become habituated (used to) to your tinnitus, so that you
can place your attention on other things, you actually do not hear the
tinnitus. This does take a lot of practice and patience, but once into the
routine it is very effective. From here the individual’s annoyance levels
of their tinnitus decrease. Practising
relaxation is an important aid to relieving tinnitus. Also giving time to your
self away from stresses and strains is equally necessary. An action plan can be
made with your Hearing Therapist to find out the best way to help you lessen
your awareness of your tinnitus.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
The aims of vestibular rehabilitation are very
simple, to encourage central compensation to occur through re educating the
brain in terms of:
Provision
of ongoing information and support regarding balance problem i.e. reduces
anxiety through knowledge of problem and what can be done.
Designing
personalised exercise programs with regard to overcoming individual’s
specific problem areas, i.e. strengthen VOR etc.
Ensuring
relaxation is followed to reduce overall stress brought about by situation.
Discussing
dietary factors where applicable i.e. in cases of Menieres disease.
